GAUGE:

17 sts + 25 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS). BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Yarn Swapping
Part 1: Common Yarn Weights and Gauges

Yarns generally fall into seven categories of weight and gauge. Many patterns and online yarn shops list yarns using these naming conventions, so it's important to know the general category of yarn your pattern calls for.

The following are based on the Craft Yarn Council's Yarn Standards chart. Keep in mind that these categories and their numbers can differ from older conventions, and they still leave a bit of wiggle room in gauge.

Terms Defined

CYCA numberWeightGauge
0Lace/Fingering33-40 sts = 4" (10cm)
1Sock/Fingering/Baby27-32 sts = 4" (10cm)
2Sport/Baby23-26 sts = 4" (10cm)
3DK/Light Worsted21-24 sts = 4" (10cm)
4Worsted/Afghan/Aran16-20 sts = 4" (10cm)
5Chunky/Craft/Rug12-15 sts = 4" (10cm)
6Bulky/Roving6-11 sts = 4" (10cm)
